The Muslims were cocky and figured that Allah made them all-powerful. When they lost to Ghengis, this demoralized the whole religion, and they had to rethink their place on the planet. Genghis sent a caravan of goods to Baghdad as offerings of peace and a willingness to open friendly trade. The Shah slaughtered the entire caravan and took the goods. So he sent another, which met with the same results. So of course Genghis is gonna be pissed and proceeded to wipe the guy's entire lands and people from the map. They brought it on themselves.
